I don`t watch a great deal of T.V. but when I do, I am very selective about my viewing.
There are no shortages of channels, so everyone should be able to find suitable programmes, although a great deal depends on your choice of TV to start with.
There are a variety of TVs available, some taking up a large amount of room space, and smart TVs which connect with the internet, so the scope for viewing may be budget related.
My own particular viewing favourites are quite specific, as will become clear.
I am not a technological expert, although I make use of and appreciate the wonderful things technology has done for us and continues to do.
WHERE DO WE GO NEXT?
However, I am of the opinion that technology is taking over so many practical skills, that one wonders where it will end?
More and more inventions are being applied to everyday life and beyond, the driverless car being tested in the U.K. being an example.
DRIVERLESS CAR:
As technology intervenes to replace human practicalities, one wonders what happens to the important interaction between brain and physical body?
The brain is having to reinvent itself, as it is responsible for the activation and management of new technological applications.
TECHNOLOGICAL INFORMATION:
The increase in technology and AI may even overload the human brain, as it is all happening at such great speed, and unless one is involved in the techno industries, many people in a work situation may find it difficult to keep up, resulting in stress and anxiety.
Lack of use of the human body is concerning.
As human beings, we are born with a complex system of a physical mass, capable of movement, strength and articulation. When working alongside the brain, the two work well together.
The brain tells the body what requires to be done, and the physical body carries it out.
There can be many thoughts and emotions involved such as assessment, difficulty, understanding, skill, improvement, completion, pride and a sense of achievement.
Together, these are building blocks which along with other components make up the human being.
IS TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS TOO RAPID?
It has taken thousands of years for humans to evolve through various ages, but with technology it is being compressed into a few years.
Hence my interest in certain TV programmes.
Of course programmes featuring the Natural World are always favourites of mine, but for You Tube watchers, I enjoy property renovation videos, especially those which feature old run down buildings.
PROPERTY FIT FOR CONVERSION:
A property will be bought, often in a warm country, with the purchaser having a vision of restoring it to either its former glory, or a more up to date version.
A few years ago, this would have been viewed as a bit of eccentricity, but as time has gone on, more and more people seem to want to take on these challenges, and that is certainly what they are.
Often situated in remote off grid locations, these projects require a great deal of architectural vision and planning, some very hard work, an optimistic outlook, and a healthy bank balance.
Once work starts, the physicality of it all kicks in.
Walls are knocked down and rebuilt, roofs are replaced, plumbing and power installed, surrounding ground cleared, alongside dealing with the inevitable problems which will arise.
HANDS ON PRACTICAL WORK:
The interesting thing is, that many of the owners come from a sedentary background. They may or may not have some DIY experience in the building trade, but that does not seem to phase them, as they are focussed on carrying out physical work.
They may even have given up a comfortable lifestyle with a regular, but mind numbing, or stressful job, as they crave something different.
What is important is that they are taking on a challenge and physically and mentally tackling it and getting positive feedback from it.
Their body and brain are working together, and the result although physically draining, is tangible and rewarding.
PHYSICAL WORK:
Looking at it from a simplistic point of view, the project will have a beginning, a middle and an end. It will have created a feeling of pride and achievement, having completed a physical project well, and a feeling of satisfaction that the individual has carried out the work.
I also enjoy farming programmes, for many of the same reasons.
Although there have been many technological advances in the farming world, there is still a great deal of hands on physical work.
It is a good example of the brain working out which of the million and one tasks need to be done to keep everything running efficiently, and the body physically making sure that these are carried out.
Having said that, there is a shortage of people taking up general farm work, the exceptions being those fortunate to find a farm for themselves and not work for someone else.
PRACTICAL WORK :
For those who do not have a physical component to their working life, it is often compensated by going to the gym, running or taking part in some other sport.
If we continue to find artificial ways to take over from our own physical activity, what will we be left with? The brain will continue to process new technological input, but the body will not be keeping up and working alongside.
Will our bodies start to evolve In some other way, as we are no longer using the physical attributes which we were born with?
It is an interesting and thought provoking future ahead for the human race.
